Traditionally, Cat’s claw was used as a tonic in the treatment of weakness and fatigue, asthma, urinary tract infections, kidney disorders, digestive disorders, gastric ulcers, cancer, shingles, skin disorders, cirrhosis, high blood pressure, arthritis, and muscle pain.

Cat’s claw (Uncaria tomentosa): Analgesic, antibacterial, anticoagulant, antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, antineoplastic, antioxi- dant, antiviral, cholesterol-lowering, diuretic, immunomodulator (lowering activated immune response where necessary, as well as enhancing immune function), wound healing.
Gou teng (
Uncaria rhynchophylla): antibacterial, anticonvulsant, anti-inflam- matory, antiviral, hypotensive, neurologically protective, relaxant, sedative.

More recently, cat’s claw and gou teng have been used during the treat- ment of Lyme disease, arthritis, and immune deficiencies.

Cat’s claw and gou teng contain some of the same alkaloids, albeit in different quantities, the latter having a greater ability to reduce neurological symptoms such as dizziness, vertigo, tremors, fevers, seizures, high blood pressure, and headaches.

Lyme disease: There is some evidence to suggest cat’s claw raises the white blood cell count and CD57 and natural killer cells. Low CD57 levels are diagnostic markers for some chronic conditions, including Lyme disease.

Cowden and colleagues24 conducted a pilot study in 2003 in Munich with Lyme clients taking cat’s claw. This showed an 85% reduction in Lyme disease when patients were retested after six months. Some considered the study flawed as patients had taken antibiotic treatment in the past and as a variety of methods were used in healing at the time, not just cat’s claw.

Anti-inflammatory: Research indicates use in reducing inflammation in the digestive system and joint tissue. A clinical trial over 4 weeks with 45 participants suffering from knee pain showed significant improvement: 15 people tested were given a placebo, and 30 people tested were given cats claw. Pain scores and inflammatory markers were reduced after first week of treatment for those who took cat’s claw.25
